The House in the Dip

Alterations & Extension, Semi-Detached Bungalow

Blackhall (in the dip), Edinburgh
A client for whom we had already done other projects.

Commissioned from writing the brief to design to completion and occupation.

The building was a dis-used joinery workshop, offices and yard.

A particularly challenging project since many of the building’s external walls were built on the boundary.  As such a range of techniques and design features had to be implemented to get natural light into the building and to give a sense of outlook from the various apartments.

The property was altered and extended to form a dwelling house.  Accommodation comprising attractive and spacious hallway leading into a long hallway with the potential to be a long gallery (for paintings or book shelves), master bedroom with en-suite shower room, two additional double bedrooms both looking into small private courtyard, bathroom, kitchen and large sitting and dining room.  The latter with large glazed wall including sliding screens for access to a very private and secluded garden.

To the front a private driveway / parking area complete with turntable for cars.  This to enable cars to drive forwards onto the driveway to then be turned on the timetable and drive forwards out of the site onto the main road.

Features:  High quality finishes; underfloor heating throughout; many Velux roof windows and light tubes to get considerable natural lighting into all areas of the building.
