The Dip, Blackhall

Job: The Dip

Type: New Use Studies & Redevelopment

Location: Blackhall Village, Edinburgh

Summary: Initiated by: The City of Edinburgh Council’s work in conjunction with the Community Council committed funds to undertake a series of environmental upgrades to help reinforce the Dip as a local commercial and retail area.

The project: Originally the Council and their advisors prepared a range of proposals to upgrade the area. The works included resurfacing pavements, tree planting, new pedestrian crossings and a prioritised pedestrian crossing against vehicle moving in a side street.

The final content of the project involved a new pedestrian crossing, remodelled pavement areas, bollards lining and protecting the pavements, tree planters, resurfaced pavements, parking bays, planting and signage.

Our role: In response to the Council’s well advanced original proposals we intervened, rallied the many businesses then worked with and on behalf of the majority of businesses in the Dip by pursuing negotiations with the Council and their consultants on what should be the goals for the improvements and what those improvements may be within the Dip.

Final outcome: Hugely successful upgrade to the area. That was the catalyst for many businesses banding together in creating a Christmas feature which included an outdoor community event with Christmas tree, many seasonal stalls, and fund raising on behalf of charities. In its first two winters this event has gone from strength to strength with a very substantial community turnout.
